About Des Cartwright

I am a self-taught artist, based in Worcestershire, working in oils, watercolour, acrylic and mixed media.

I usually paint in a loose, impressionistic style, favouring large brushes for watercolour and painting knives for oils. My gallery includes many local scenes but I also paint any subject that has inspired me on my frequent travels.

Because I have family there, I have visited China many times. The incredible beauty of both the countryside and the cities have inspired me to create many paintings.

Mostly, my watercolours are done on 38 x 28cm (15 x 11inch) paper and my oils on 50 x 40cm (20 x 16inch) stretched canvas.

Though my paintings usually depict actual scenes I use artistic licence to achieve pleasing compositions so expect to find some objects moved, or eliminated and colours changed, or exaggerated - not many views in nature make good paintings as they stand!
